Viral -- it sounds so easy!!!

My fondest hope has been that this site would go viral. That we'd hear of folks gazing in amazement at the election news from Merrimack somewhere in Singapore.

In that hope, I shared with you my little April Fool's hoax. I did see the numbers spike yesterday to their highest page count by a long shot. Maybe that was my hoax, maybe it was just that the election is around the corner.

Thanks to those of you who read and enjoyed the hoax. Only one person that I know of got taken in, and to protect my own physical life and safety, I shall not expose him.

To those of you who wonder how it is a serious candidate can do something so FOOLish... It is the hobbits who bring goodness back to Middle Earth. It is the Ewoks who bring ruin to Darth Vader and the Emperor's evil reign.

I AM a serious candidate, but humor is a very serious part of being serious.

Your "Master Plan," tell me, why is it simply commercialization rather than something more meaningful? I agree that the roads should be fixed. We don't need a Starbucks. I don't believe we need a mall. That big open field where you want it will be ruined. The town will be overcrowded. And you think all this commercialization will "make a name for Merrimack, New Hampshire." We already have a name for us. It's not big, it's not flashy, and that's the way it should be. We're a relatively small town full of good people, and if commercialization is taken too far, it will be ruined. Not in the eyes of the moneymakers, but the eyes of the people that have lived here their whole life and do not want to see this town die. And you call THIS progress.

Good day, sir.

Anonymous,

I don't have a Master Plan. I haven't asked for anything in the open field across from Depot Farm Stand -- assuming that's what you're talking about.

Here's my point. That land is owned by someone who wants to make money with it. There are limits to what WE can limit.

Besides, a town cannot stay stagnant. Changes come and go.

The biggest problem with our town center is that it DIDN'T change with the times. It still had the old green chemical building just rotting and sagging. Abbot's slowly fell apart.

There's a trick. It's in defining ourselves and guiding the growth.

You've got me wrong... I'm not for selling our town to the highest bidder... I'm for allowing property owners to judiciously make money on their property and for providing better and greater services for our residents.

As for a name, perhaps we have one... but I suggest to you that we're known for used car lots and gourmet restaurants. That's not enough to support a town. That's not much to embrace and be proud of.

This is the first time I have checked out this site, and reading the previous blog posted anonymously scared me. I have lived in this town for 3 years. I feel as though I have moved back to Epping where I grew up in the 1980's. The too were afraid of change, of progress. The didn't like raising taxes yet did not want industry, commercial properties that bring in tax revenue to the town without adding children to the schools. This was shortsighted and ignorant, quite frankly. In the three years I have been here, people complain about taxes, but also complain about new projects that would offset what we need to pay, while still improving our home values because of the impending value to the town. A town can have history, preserve that histroy in a respectful manner, while still embracing the fact that yes, time has moved on. Rather than fight progress, we should embrace it and make it our own, make it work for us. I am dishartened that more people don't see this as a good, positive thing. I am also relieved that as a candidate, you seem to understand that. I applaud your stance, and look forward to hearing more of your views.

Kathy,

Thanks so much for your kind and (I think) insightful comments.

I hope you've had a chance to look at my main website -- www.merrimack08.com. This is the comment space for that page.

I think if you look at the "Vision" page off the top menu on that page, you may find more details. If you've already been there, THANKS, and I'll work to keep these kinds of ideas going forward.

Win or lose tomorrow, this vision campaign is only starting.
